Early Human History: From Bipedalism and Fire to Farming’s “Biggest Fraud”

What if human evolution was less of a carefully designed master plan and more of a series of risky experiments that somehow worked?


That was probably my biggest takeaway from Early Human History by History Brought Alive. The book takes readers through the ecological, physical, and behavioral transitions of early humans, but what kept me reading was its refusal to make evolution look like a neat staircase from “primitive” to “modern.” Instead, it feels more like humanity kept trying things, adapting, failing, improvising—and occasionally getting very creative.


Bipedalism: An Evolutionary Experiment With a Price


Take bipedalism. It is introduced almost as an evolutionary experiment rather than an obvious winning strategy. And then comes Lucy.


Lucy’s pelvis, knee joint, and spinal curvature show a strong commitment to habitual upright walking, despite her having an ape-sized brain. That detail genuinely surprised me. Apparently, our ancestors did not need to become brainy first and start walking upright later.


Movement came first; other transformations followed.


And why walk on two legs when four seems considerably safer?


One answer is visibility. An upright posture could help early humans scan open landscapes while also reducing direct exposure to the sun during the hottest parts of the day. But evolution, naturally, did not offer a free lunch. Bipedalism also made hip, knee, and ankle injuries more problematic. With only two limbs doing the locomotion job, an injury could become a serious survival crisis.


So why did it persist?


Because apparently evolution was willing to gamble when the environmental rewards outweighed the risks. It’s ironic how the physical costs of bipedalism resisted its spread like fungi.



Stone Tools and the Evolution of Human Innovation


The same sense of deliberate experimentation appears with stone tools. Early toolmakers repeatedly selected similar stone types and shapes even when alternatives were available.


With Oldowan technology, innovation began shifting beyond simply overpowering rivals toward reshaping the environment itself. That repeated choice of particular stone attributes offered a hidden evolutionary meaning: early humans were not simply using whatever was lying around. Their choices reveal something about learning, preference, and technological behavior.


But then came the really fascinating competitor: fire.



Fire Was Not Just a Tool—It Was an Environment


The discussion of fire versus stone-tool use was one of my favorite parts. Early humans may initially have depended on naturally occurring fires rather than knowing how to create them independently. Yet fire eventually became something much bigger than a tool.


It extended activity beyond daylight, buffered temperature stress, expanded habitable environments, changed food processing, and altered daily rhythms.

Fire was not simply carried.


It was lived within.


That idea stayed with me. Stone tools changed what humans could manipulate; fire changed the environment in which humans lived.



From Changing Landscapes to Insular Dwarfism


The book then moves through shifting landscapes and resource availability, showing how early humans occupied relatively reliable river valleys, lake margins, and plains, while shifting their geographic ranges when conditions deteriorated rather than completely transforming their subsistence strategies.


The discussion of insular dwarfism was another fascinating turn. In isolated island environments with limited resources, reduced body size could become advantageous over generations. This was not necessarily pathology or abnormal development, but an evolutionary response to environmental constraints.



Jebel Irhoud, Denisovans, and the Rise of Cognitive Flexibility


The discussion of Jebel Irhoud further complicates the familiar story of human origins. The combination of modern facial and dental traits with more archaic braincase features demonstrates how early Homo sapiens did not simply appear overnight in a completely modern form.


Then comes behavioral modernity.


Complex language, symbolic communication, and varied tool traditions did not arise from one magical invention or a single evolutionary moment. They appeared gradually and unevenly across different regions.


And perhaps my favorite concept here: cognitive flexibility.


The suggestion that early modern humans succeeded not merely because they had bigger or better brains, but because they could adapt strategies, learn socially, and respond creatively to changing conditions, is much more interesting than the simplistic “smart humans beat everyone else” story.


The Denisovan evidence makes the human story even messier. DNA extracted from Denisovan fossils established them as genetically distinct from both Neanderthals and Homo sapiens, revealing a much more complicated human past.


Population size also mattered. Larger, more connected populations could absorb losses and retain cultural knowledge, while smaller, fragmented populations such as Neanderthals and Denisovans were more vulnerable to local extinction.


And those differences in skull shape? They should not automatically be interpreted as differences in cognitive capacity or biological superiority. Neanderthals and Homo sapiens were closely related—and they interbred.



Early Human Symbolism: What Did the Mongolian Pendant Mean?


And then there is symbolism.


A small Mongolian pendant becomes evidence of early symbolic behavior because its production required sequential planning without an obvious survival function. Fascinating—but here I wanted more.


What exactly did that ornament communicate within those early social circles?

Was it identity, status, belonging, ritual, attraction—or something we simply cannot recover?


That missing explanation bothered my curious side.



Climate Change, Territoriality, and the Road to Farming


he book also explores how late Pleistocene climate change was anything but a smooth warming process. Rapid, uneven, unstable environmental changes challenged human predictability and survival. As reliable habitats shrank, increased territoriality could reflect the need to defend geographical knowledge and ecological resources rather than simply an urge for territorial expansion.


Even the transition from foraging to farming refuses to fit into a neat box.


The boundary between the two was historically blurred. People experimented with wild resources, tended plants and animals, combined foraging with cultivation, and gradually moved toward domestication. Wild plants could be slightly modified through repeated harvesting and replanting before becoming fully domesticated.


Then comes Göbekli Tepe and, eventually, the provocative question of whether agriculture was really progress.



Was Agriculture “History’s Biggest Fraud”?


The book introduces Yuval Noah Harari’s famously provocative description of agriculture as “history’s biggest fraud.”


That line triggered questions.


If agriculture made individual lives harder while helping populations expand, was it really such a bad deal?


Then came another twist: denser farming communities living closely with livestock experienced greater exposure to crowd and zoonotic diseases. Over generations, those populations experienced strong selection pressures around disease resistance, while previously less-exposed foraging groups could be devastated by unfamiliar infections.


So perhaps farming was not exactly humanity’s biggest fraud.


Perhaps it was more like a terrible bargain with excellent population growth statistics.



Final Thoughts: Human Evolution Was Anything but a Straight Line


That is what I enjoyed most about Early Human History. It does not present human evolution as a sequence of miraculous leaps. Bipedalism, tools, fire, symbolism, cognitive flexibility, population connectivity, and agriculture all emerge through gradual ecological and behavioral negotiations.


The writing was engaging enough that I was excited to learn more “why(s)” without skimming. More importantly, it kept triggering questions that sent me researching in parallel.


And the best part?


I finished the book with more questions than I started with.

For me, that is usually a very good sign.
